TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

More than ever before I am alarmed by our built environment and the negative role architects and developers have been playing. It my mission is to constructively help empower the next generation of architects with worthy objectives and the skills and vision to provide resilient places that people can love and will care for.   It's is about guiding students towards common sense for the better of humanity, to learn from successes, and offering them comprehensive curriculums taught by dedicated professors who strive to create a better world.

Fall semester 2012

The fifth year design studio was focused on traditional urbanism and architecture and taught in close connection with the Graduate Seminar: Theory to Reality. Both classes used Bahia Muyuyo, Guayas Ecuador as a case study and six guest speakers from the professional sector. (see semester schedule)

The students, invited by the Ecuadorian client, the Lapentti Family started the semester by traveling to Ecuador to study the current context and history, and worked with the client to understand the developers vision and the needs of the place and people. The Lapenttis gave feedback to the students throughout the semester and came to the final presentations of designs. The student work was very influential to the progress of the project.

Students produced:

Over all master plans of the the 450 hector site

The first neighbourhood urban plan

A series of houses inspired by local traditional patterns and climate.

CONSULTING

"It's all about the people, peoples' daily social and economic needs," Alimanestianu stressed. "We need to recognize that we do have a wonderful place. Why is it not thriving? A place can be aesthetically pleasing, but it's not the answer. It must cater the people and their many needs."

-Joanna Alimanestianu, Hamptons Press, December 2008
